In the shop, things are done in a more orderly and controlled fashion, but field methods can be just as effective, and are often your only option. In this video we summarize how to use steam to correct a warped wood window. This sort of defect usually spells costly replacement, but as usual, tried and true, no-fuss, practical techniques quickly save the window sash. Preserving material is the most cost effective and energy efficient approach by far. The past is the future.
First, a straight reference bar is placed across the warped piece. Next, a clamp is used to straighten the wood. Finally, steam is applied to the warped wood, and a simple cloth holds the steam in place long enough for the steamer to replenish it.
